Overview

The Higher Certificate in Software Development is a part- time level 6 programme designed to provide students with the an introduction to computer science in stage one with modules in Programming Fundamentals, Web Development Fundamentals, Computer Architecture, Computer Security Principles, Mathematics for Computer Science, Modular Programming, Introduction to Databases, Operating Systems in Practice, Networking Fundamentals, Discrete Mathematics and Physical Computing.

The second stage of the Higher Certificate programme builds on the stage one foundation and has a deeper focus on software development with modules in Object-Oriented Programming, Requirements Engineering, Data Structures & Algorithms, OO Analysis & Design, Database Design, NoSQL Data Architectures, and many more.

Course Delivery

  • At least six semesters, depending on the number of modules taken per semester.
  • All lectures and labs are 100% online. Certain semester terminal examinations will need to be completed on-campus in Bishopstown, Cork.

Award

Higher Certificate in Science in Software Development (Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications).

What is a Module?

A module is a standalone unit of learning and assessment and is completed within one semester. A full-time student will normally study six modules in each semester; part-time and ACCS (Accumulation of Credits and Certification of Subjects) students will have flexibility as to the number of modules taken.

Entry Requirements

Non-Standard Applicants: Mature Students, FETAC (now QQI) Level 5 applicants are particularly welcome.  Standard Applicants: Leaving Certificate Grade O6/H7 (pre. 2017, D3 Ordinary Level) in five subjects to include Mathematics and either English or Irish.

 

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is when formal recognition is given for what you already know prior to starting on a programme or module. With recognition of prior learning the focus is on learning and not on experience as such. You can apply for RPL in any MTU accredited programme or module. Programmes which are accredited by professional bodies or any external awarding bodies may have their own procedures for RPL which you should refer to.

Fees

€250 per 5 credit module.

  • Please note that applicants will be required to pay an acceptance fee of €500 online if a place on a course is offered. This fee is deductible from the overall course fee.

Potential areas of employment include working as a Software Developer, Software Tester, Software Support Engineer or Database Developer, to name but a few career possibilities.

Progression

Graduates of the Higher Certificate may progress to stage three of the Bachelor of Science in Software Development programme which is also offered part-time by night.
