Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Information Design and Development

Module Credit Description
XML in Technical Communications (M) 10 ECTS Extensible Markup Language (XML) has had a huge impact on software development, data representation and interchange and its application in technical communications is now going in importance. XML provides a platform independent and vendor neutral method for creating and publishing documentation that can be easily transformed into a large variety of output formats. This module aims to develop student’s skills in XML and in particular Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) which is an XML language designed specifically for technical communications.
Multimedia Production (M) 5 ECTS The aim of this module is to provide the learner with an introduction to media production technologies and practices. The module also aims to extend skills in communicating to a target audience using rich media applications. It provides learners with an understanding of the structural, conceptual, and practical design issues related to rich media solutions.
Information Design & Development (M) 10 ECTS This module will focus on developing skills to enable an information developer to design and develop a technical document. In the module the student learn how to design and write documents to produce clear and effective scientific and technical documents. In addition, the student will learn to design and develop a design template and apply a styling convention using best practices.
Information Strategy (M) 5 ECTS The primarily focus of this module is in developing skills and knowledge to allow students to successfully plan and manage an
information development strategy. At the end of this module students will be able to evaluate the strategic value of adopting a structured content and authoring approach with the aim
of optimising an organisations efficiency and effectiveness.
Information Experience (M) 10 ECTS Information in its most basic form represents the user interface text and the integration of this text with the user, the features and workflows if what collectively forms the “information experience”.
By providing the right information the usability of the product that it describes is improved which leads to improved user satisfaction. This module presents the theory of human information interaction and how presentation and situation affect the end user experience. This module also outlines the main methods to finding information, the approaches of integration information and evaluation the overall end user experience.
Emerging Technological
Trends
(M)
5 ECTS This module will look at emerging technological trends and enable information developers to work more effectively with new products and technologies.
Document Project Management (M) 10 ECTS Topic based design and development in technical communications has introduced new complexities in project management. This module focuses: on how to estimate, schedule and track documents designed and implemented using topics in a collaborative work environment; and the quality activities required to ensure that the documentation produced is accurate and aligned to the intended audience.
Information Analytics (E) 5 ECTS In Information Analytics a learner will use a range of analytical techniques to gain valuable insights from data for a specific application domain. The module will focus on the application
of machine learning techniques that facilitate the identification of trends and patterns in data over time.


Master in Science in Information Design and Development

In addition to the modules listed above the MSc in Information Design & Development requires the learner to undertake a research project. More information on this programme is listed here. Please note a summary of the project is outlined below.

Info Dev Research Project 30 ECTS Learners must undertake advanced, independent, added-value research work through self-directed learning. Learners must develop and implement appropriate research methods and techniques to address the research problem. Learners are required to identify how the work contributes to furthering knowledge in the specific field of research. Learners must disseminate the research work and research outcomes through an oral presentation, poster presentation, and submission of a thesis.
